GTU "Concubines"

"We don't need to pick up strange men -- we have strange men!"
-- Jodi Meadows (Moore), C'90

GTU "Concubines" are close male friends of the sorority -- in a sense, male social affiliates.

The designation originated in the early '80s. Back then, a Concubine was simply a young man who happened to be dating a GTU. Some Concubines dated several GTUs serially. Soon, however, the term "concubine" came to be applied to men who were close to the sorority and trusted by all its sisters.

Sheri Morton Stanley (C'85) remembers: "...we did kinda use the Concubines as an escort service when we couldn't get dates -- because we knew we'd have fun with them and we wouldn't have to have on our 'party manners,' and we wouldn't have to worry about getting home safely, 'cause they could be trusted. Randy [Raybon] and John [Stanley], particularly (and much to their chagrin) were everybody's big brothers."

Brittany Wilkins (C'93) remembers that GTU was first recommended to her during a casual conversation with a sophomore Concubine. In this sense, our Concubines are also our ambassadors. This web site is graciously hosted by Concubine Matt Laney.

Our Concubines attend all of our important social functions, including Shake Day and even Rush house visits. They sometimes appear with us in our official yearbook photos. They can make GTU seem like a co-ed Greek organization, an experience currently unavailable at Sewanee. Above all, these men are lots of fun to be with.

Like "little brothers," only sexier. :-)
