Annual Social Functions

Like all sororities at Sewanee, Gamma Tau Upsilon hosts several major social functions each year.

The Halloween Party

A GTU darkens one eye with makeup and puts on a T-shirt with a "P" stitched on the front, transforming herself into a "black-eyed P." One sister borrows clothes from another and dresses up as her -- but she can't quite get the imitated sister's high-pitched squeak right. Another sister straps down her bosom with an Ace bandage, puts on a cap, and does a disturbingly convincing impersonation of a Phi.

These are scenes from past GTU Halloween parties. Photos are coming soon to prove it!

The Champagne Christmas Formal

This is GTU's Fall Semester formal event, but the only thing that is really formal there is the dress.

The Birthday Party

Each February, GTU celebrated its birthday with a party organized by the new pledge class. The pledges are responsible for decorating, providing music, designing a "birthday banner," making the cake, etc. They also present the actives with an original birthday surprise!

The Barefoot Formal

This is our Spring Semester "formal" event. Traditionally, women wear beautiful dresses but no shoes, and men come barefoot in formal tops and shorts. Sometimes croquet is played. Guests bring their own meat, if desired, to grill out. The sorority provides all the trimmings.

The newly activated pledge class also organizes this event, their first GTU social function as actives.
